In the front-page picture of “Guilty” Trump in Friday’s Tribune, my eye was quickly drawn to the American flag on his lapel. My first thought was that the circle-slash symbol should overlay it; truth in advertising demands it. That’s because Trump is out to negate all the flag stands for, not least are “freedom and justice for all,” as the Pledge of Allegiance affirms.
His pledge would go something like this: “I pledge allegiance to my power, and whatever it takes to make it stand: One kingdom, under me, with my edicts and whims trumping all.”
Hours after the verdict, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow zeroed in on the heart of the matter: “Trump is not really running against Biden. He is running against democracy.” That hit the bulls-eye.
