Trustee Adduci, don’t look for scapegoats
As a former trustee and former River Forest Pension Fund Board member, I can state unequivocally that the River Forest pension funds have been grossly underfunded for years [To state legislators: Reform pensions, Viewpoints, Dec. 1].
James H. McCauley, 71, Owned McCauley Mechanical Construction Inc.
James H. McCauley Sr., 71, died on Dec. 3, 2010. Born in 1939, he was devoted to his faith and his church, a respected industry leader and former president and owner of McCauley Mechanical Construction Inc.
Betty Van Wyk, 71, reporter, township clerk, Zonta member
Betty Van Wyk (Vicha), 71, of Oak Park, died on Nov. 14, 2010, in Tampa, Fla., while battling pancreatic cancer. A journalism graduate of Hope College, she taught high school in Normal before returning to Chicago where she was born in 1939. Moving to Oak Park, she became a reporter for Pioneer Press, handling the education beat for the Oak Leaves.

Search for the ‘good stuff’ on Halloween not new
Maybe a little late to respond to this, but I just read Ms. Maychruk’s note about the “good” Halloween candy in Wednesday Journal, and I wanted to give some input [Who gets the ‘good’ candy? Viewpoints, Nov. 10].
George Klumpner, 62, Attorney
George Harold Klumpner, 62, of Downers Grove, died on Nov. 23, 2010. Born to Dr. George Klumpner and Inger Olson Klumpner, 56-year Oak Park residents, he grew up in Oak Park and attended Longfellow School and Oak Park and River Forest High School.
New Walgreens, same great service
The new and long-awaited Walgreens at Madison and Oak Park has opened. They did a nice job. The store is quite well laid out, but maintains a traditional look by preserving the north and east façade.
Civil union act deserves celebration, examination
Passage of the Illinois civil union act deserves celebration. It is society’s acknowledgment that the commitment of a lesbian or gay couple to a shared life is valuable and deserves the support of the vast legal infrastructure designed to treat the partners as a single economic unit, for their mutual benefit and that of society as a whole.
James Maple, 87, U.S. Steel chemist, West Suburban Lapidary Club member
James L. Maple, 87, a longtime resident of Oak Park, died on Nov. 24, 2010. Born on Sept. 24, 1923 near Royal Oak, Mich., to Paul and Antoinette Maple, he had three brothers and one sister. Mr. Maple studied music at Muskegon College and served in the U.S. Air Force, 1943-44, then continuing his service in the Air Reserves until 1955.
