Diane Mary Merkle, 64, died on Oct. 11, 2026, in Oak Park after a courageous struggle with cancer. Born on Aug. 11, 1962, in Chicago, she earned a master’s degree in Education, leading to a career as a high school teacher for more than 30 years. In the classroom, she was an instructor, guide, advocate, and steady hand. She taught from books and from her own experience.

Her work extended beyond the classroom, to coaching tennis and driver’s education. Students learned from her the value of practice, responsibility, and perseverance.

Her faith guided her life, showing through in her kindness. She found joy in simple and everyday things. She loved lattes, a good movie, pickleball, bocce ball, and tennis. She delighted in travel, and always had a list of where to go to next. She cheered for the Cubs, Blackhawks, and Bulls as well. Any hurdle or hardship Diane was faced and she pushed others to do the same.

She met the world with strength and gentleness. She wanted to be a teacher since she was a little girl. Though her earthly voyage has reached its close, her memory lives on in the students she taught, the family she cherished, and the friends she uplifted.

Diane was the wife of Tim Merkle; the mother of Sarah Merkle and Joseph Merkle; sister of Ida Ortega, Aurora “Georgie” Vendrell, Mildred Ortiz and Eliseo Ortiz. Sister-in-law of Suzanne Herbst, Joyce Merkle, Marla Merkle, Frank Ortega, James Herbst, David Merkle, and John Merkle, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nephews and nieces.

Diane Mary Merkle was a blessing among us, and her life shall be spoken of with gratitude, affection, and reverence.
