The decision on whether to change the current zoning ordinance to allow more flexibility in types of residences affects everyone. The character of the village is shaped by our built environment. The zoning that guides future development either supports the status quo or allows new approaches to the ways we live in our community.
The question of how to decide whether to change the current regulations affects both current and future residents. Many residents are not familiar with how zoning is decided and how it affects their property. It is important for the public to be informed. If major zoning changes are proposed, there must be adequate communication about those changes and the opportunity to have input into a final decision.
I support bringing a major change in zoning regulations to the public through a referendum process. This would allow for adequate public notice, communication/education, and interaction prior to a vote. The process would shine a light on this issue and encourage more people to be aware of and informed about any important proposed change.
It would still be up to the village board to craft the language and details of implementing any changes. It would simply ensure that residents are given the benefit of being adequately informed before any action is taken. In the past there have been decisions that have led to a great deal of blowback after a policy has already been enacted. This is not good for the board or the residents.
For an issue with permanent and significant impact for Oak Park, taking the time to craft a well-articulated referendum, adequate and clear public information/education prior to a vote, and opportunities for dialogue aside of the regular board meeting will make it more likely that whatever the outcome, people feel heard and engaged.
