Sophomore running back Liam Smith rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns as the Oak Park and River Forest High School football team snapped an eight-game losing streak, going back to last season, with a 56-0 rout of visiting Proviso West in a West Suburban Silver game, Sept. 13. The victory also was their first at home since Oct. 7, 2022, which also came against Proviso West.

Junior quarterback Johnny Nelson threw three touchdown passes for the Huskies (1-2, 1-0), who led 28-0 after one quarter and 49-0 at halftime. In the second half, junior running back Jayden Bassett scored on a 29-yard run.

A near upset for Fenwick

Junior quarterback Jamen Williams completed 22 of 30 passes for 234 yards and a touchdown, but it wasn’t enough as Fenwick fell 14-13 at Joliet Catholic, Sept. 13.

After Jalen Morgan scored on a 7-yard run with just over a minute left in regulation to bring Fenwick (2-1) within a point, the Friars opted to go for a two-point conversion and the lead. But Williams’ pass to Nate Marshall in the left corner of the end zone was batted away by Joliet Catholic’s Mike Jaworski.

Raphiel Stewart caught five passes, including 20 yards for a first-half touchdown, and Treston Smith caught six for Fenwick, which hosts Montini in a Chicago Catholic League/East Suburban Catholic Conference White Division opener, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m., at Triton College.
