I waited until the last minute to decide who I would support for Oak Park Village President. I was happy that two women who cared about our community were the candidates. However, I really struggled with which one would help heal the tremendous acrimony in our village board discussions, would focus on the tremendous financial issues we face in this community, and would be familiar with how complicated our village budget and other processes really are.
I have listened to Zoom calls and Facebook streams on both sides, and I have decided that Vicki Scaman is trying to address these issues. She has explicitly addressed board culture, the financial issues and the village processes with concrete ideas and not just liberal buzzwords such as affordable housing, reimagining the police, and promoting sustainability.
I have been very troubled by the lack of listening in our board discussions, the lack of transparency of village staff actions and agenda setting, the lack of listening to our commission experts and the lack of empathy for those of us who are now seniors and want to stay in our own homes as our income declines.
I feel that Vicki really gets those issues and has concrete ideas about how we might address the issues that affect diversity, small business success, and revenue growth in this village. I am proud to endorse Vicki Scaman for Village President.
