The Berwyn Development Corporation’s (BDC) Berwyn’s Best competition began in early January and was fixed on finding the best local specialty coffee. Avito Caffe (6510 W Ogden Ave; avitofilm.com/caffe) walked home a winner with its Café Nutella. The cafe latte starts with a healthy scoop of Nutella hazelnut spread steamed into the milk. The drink is built around fresh roasted La Capannina espresso shots for a masterful blend of Arabica and Robusto coffees that encompass the essence of Italy.

Avito Caffe went up against other local favorites Café Latino, Friendly Coffee Lounge, Happy Buddha Cafe and Mission House Cafe. The final competition brought together a group of local judges for a blind taste-test event to compare each specialty coffee side-by-side based on taste, presentation and texture. Judges included Brian Pabst of the City of Berwyn, Joe Chomiczewski of the Wednesday Journal, Tom Head of Heads Up Coffee, Kristen Hlavacek of James & Williams Jewelers, Martha Santoyo of Avon by Martha Santoyo and Aaron Mitchell of The Outta Space, Inc and BAM! Berwyn Arts and Music. Their scores along with a public poll determined the contest winner.

Vito Brancato reacted to the award, “After 14 years of serving up Italian “caffe” at 6510 Ogden, it’s an honor to be voted Berwyn’s best coffee shop. I share this honor with the cast of loyal characters (oops, I mean customers) that inspire my filmmaking. And as always, DRINK COFFEE, YOU CAN SLEEP WHEN YOU’RE DEAD.”
