A long-vacant storefront in downtown Oak Park may soon get a tenant, though probably not one that the village had originally coveted.
Oak Park Apartments, the hulking Whiteco Residential project, just north of Lake Street on Harlem Avenue, is applying to open a Weight Watchers clinic at 477 N. Harlem. The retail space is just south of Trader Joe’s and has sat empty since the project was completed around 2008.
Weight-loss clinics are not allowed in first-floor retail space near the street, so Whiteco is asking the village for a special-use permit. The Zoning Board of Appeals is set to take up that request at its next meeting, likely on March 7.
