We, the Community of Congregations, are a community of faith leaders representing faith traditions across numerous religions and communities. From these traditions, we stand firmly against violence, abuse of power, and the suppression of human dignity in all its forms.
We condemn the use of force, intimidation, and fear by the Trump administration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and any authority that treats people as problems rather than as humans. We reject the defense of those who abuse their power, and we grieve the harm done to immigrants, families, and communities who are targeted, traumatized, and torn apart.
Our faith traditions call us to protect the vulnerable, welcome the stranger, and seek justice with courage and compassion. Violence against immigrants, cruelty in policy, and the silencing of peaceful protest violate these sacred principles and erode the moral foundation of our society. We condemn these violent practices witnessed in our communities in the Chicago area as well as those elsewhere in the United States.
We affirm the right — and responsibility — of people to protest injustice without fear of retaliation. We oppose the suppression of voices crying out for dignity, safety, and freedom.
We stand in solidarity with immigrants, refugees, and all who live in fear of detention, deportation, and discrimination. We commit ourselves to advocacy, accompaniment, and the pursuit of policies rooted in mercy, fairness, and respect for human life.
Human dignity is not conditional upon one’s place of birth or beliefs.
We call on our leaders, institutions, and fellow citizens to reject cruelty, defend the oppressed, and build a future shaped by the virtues of compassion and justice.
