Fresh off a successful spring-break trip in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, the Fenwick High School softball team continued its winning ways last week, notching four victories to raise its winning streak to seven games.
On April 13, the Friars (9-5) routed host Resurrection 19-0. Alex Purta went 3-for-3 with two home runs and six RBI. Ayanna Bourn and Sofia Kateeb each drove in three runs, and Kyleena Nowinski had three hits.
The following day, Kateeb belted a two-run homer, and Bella Bigham (4-for-5) and McKenna Posluszny each had three RBI in Fenwick’s 16-4 victory at Loyola Academy. Back at the Fenwick Priory in River Forest, April 17, the Friars started in inauspicious fashion as Hailey Smith-Young allowed five runs to Payton Prep in an inning-plus. But the offense picked her up in a big way, scoring a combined 11 runs in the third and fourth innings for a 13-5 victory. Bigham (two stolen bases), Kateeb, and Gianna Pescatore each had two hits, and Ellie Brady and Jordan Rossi (who got the win in the circle with six shutout innings) had two RBI apiece.
On April 18, Kateeb allowed only one hit and struck out nine, and also drove in the game’s only run, as Fenwick blanked visiting Providence Catholic 1-0.
Fenwick baseball
Jeremy Munoz hit a two-run homer, and Jimmy Bonakdar and Julian Torres each had two RBI in the Friars’ 8-5 victory at De La Salle, April 15. Bobby Milder allowed two runs and five hits in 5.2 innings for the win.
Back at the Priory, April 17, Johnny Buchman had three RBI as Fenwick (7-5) rolled past Aurora Central Catholic 12-2. Trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, the Friars exploded for nine runs to take command.
Gio Rangel went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Munoz added a two-run double. Finn Milder (1.2 scoreless innings) got the win in relief.
OPRF softball
The Huskies (15-5) scored a total of 49 runs in three consecutive road victories last week. On April 15, Julia Henderson (4-for-5) hit a pair of home runs and drove in four as OPRF defeated York in a wild 24-17 contest. Leia Hammerschmidt, Maya Mendell, and Charlie Terry also homered for the Huskies, who collected 20 hits.
Two days later at Lyons Township, Mendell hit two homers and had three RBI in OPRF’s 6-5 victory. Hammerschmidt went 4-for-4, and Terry had two RBI. Carolyn Rainey went the distance in the circle, allowing five runs (all unearned) on five hits and striking out five.
At Downers Grove South, April 18, Hammerschmidt went 4-for-6 with a homer, and Terry and Georgia Godellas drove in four apiece in the Huskies’ 19-10 victory. Godellas and Margot Smith each added a home run.
OPRF baseball
Six different players had two RBI apiece as the Huskies (12-7) routed host Morton 16-3 in six innings, April 18.
Liam Brown, Alex Burke, Julian Collazo, Robert Kolovitz, Ian Moore, and Dino Pantazopoulos each drove in a pair of runs, while Oliver Puntillo went 3-for-3 at the plate. Xavier Martin allowed two runs on only one hit in 3.1 innings for the victory.
Earlier in the week, OPRF took two of three from Glenbard West in a West Suburban Silver series. In the rubber game in Glen Ellyn, April 16, Grayson Waters tossed five scoreless innings as the Huskies blanked the Hilltoppers 4-0. Waters allowed four hits and struck out four. Owyn Edwards and Cam Barnes combined for two perfect innings in relief.
Puntillo again went 3-for-3 and Moore along with Brandon Beasley each had two hits as OPRF had 11 for the day.
Trinity softball
Gisella Corral struck out 17 and allowed one run on four hits as the Blazers (4-6) routed host Westmont 11-1, April 17. Corral, D’Asya Collins, and Maddie Trendel each collected three hits, and Collins drove in three runs.
On April 18, Trinity defeated host Rosary 15-3 in five innings. Aly Lopez struck out 10 batters and allowed three runs on five hits for the victory. Jaida Escanio and Abby Young each had two RBI, and Corral, Escanio, and Lopez had two hits apiece.
