Oak Park’s District 97 school board and Dr. Ushma Shah announced Friday that Shah had resigned that day.
A special board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday to discuss Shah’s resignation, appointment of an acting superintendent and the appointment of co-interim superintendents.
In a press release distributed Friday, the district noted that Shah had led the elementary school system since June 1, 2022, “bringing visionary leadership, a deep commitment to student success, and a collaborative spirit that has strengthened our school community.”
The release also noted that the board will appoint interim superintendents to lead the district during the coming school year, which starts Wednesday. It said the search will include opportunities for the public to comment. There will be a public comment portion of today’s special board meeting, which will begin with a closed session.
“In the meantime, District 97’s day-to-day operations will continue without disruption under the guidance of our experienced and highly capable leadership team,” the release said. “We have full confidence in the leaders who are in place and in their commitment to ensuring a smooth start to the school year.”
Shah has not responded to multiple requests for comment by Wednesday Journal. The matter was not discussed at last Tuesday’s board meeting, where Shah was in attendance.
Likewise, Amanda Siegfried, senior director of communications and engagement, was unavailable for comment via phone and email Friday and today.
Contacted Saturday, board president Cheree Moore was unable to comment pending further discussion with board members.
“Not at this time,” Moore said, referring a reporter to the district statement.
This is a developing story. Wednesday Journal will have further reporting following the District 97 school board meeting Monday evening.
