Have you noticed the growing number of squarish holes in the middle of streets around Oak Park? I surmised – correctly, it turns out – that they are precursors to speed humps, no doubt courtesy of our village trustees whose obsession with alleged safety improvements is getting beyond annoying. Do these obstacles make us safer? I say no.

In fact, these most recent ones weren’t even marked, so if they surprise you or if you encounter them after dark they are a hazard. The primary result I’ve experienced is damage to the underside of my car.

To make us safer, the village ought to enforce existing speed limits and pass an ordinance to require bicyclists and eBike riders to pass a Rules of the Road test and be licensed. I am considering suing the village to recoup some or all of the $2,205 I’ve had to spend recently repairing or replacing various parts on my car’s underside and rear end.

If others are interested, maybe we could get together and make it a class action suit.
