As a resident and homeowner in Oak Park, I am deeply concerned about proposals that would eliminate or significantly weaken single-family zoning protections throughout our community.

Oak Park is not just a collection of buildings. It is a community defined by its historic homes, tree-lined streets, diverse neighborhoods, strong schools, and the unique character that has attracted generations of families. The village’s single-family neighborhoods are a critical part of that character and deserve protection.

Supporters of rezoning often frame the issue as a choice between preserving neighborhoods and addressing housing affordability. In reality, those goals are not mutually exclusive. Oak Park can pursue thoughtful housing solutions without fundamentally changing the residential neighborhoods that residents have invested in and relied upon for decades.

Rezoning single-family districts for higher-density development would bring lasting consequences. Increased traffic, parking shortages, additional pressure on schools and infrastructure, loss of green space, and changes to the architectural character of our neighborhoods are all legitimate concerns that deserve serious consideration. Homeowners made significant financial investments based on existing zoning and the reasonable expectation that established residential areas would remain stable.

Oak Park should focus growth where it makes the most sense: along commercial corridors, near transit, and through the redevelopment of underutilized properties. These strategies can create new housing opportunities while preserving the neighborhoods that make Oak Park special.

Residents are not opposing change. We are asking for balanced, thoughtful planning that respects both current residents and future generations. Once the character of a neighborhood is altered, it cannot easily be restored.

I urge the village board to reject broad rezoning proposals that would eliminate protections for single-family neighborhoods and instead pursue housing initiatives that complement, rather than compromise, the qualities that have made Oak Park one of the most desirable communities in the region.
