The Oak Park and River Forest High School girls’ volleyball team finished second in the Denise Kavanaugh Invitational at Downers Grove South, losing in the final to Joliet West, 25-21, 19-25, 19-25, Sept. 12.
Emmi Bozarth led the Huskies (8-6) with 12 kills and an ace. Bella Gray had nine kills, Celia Jackson seven kills, and Edie Carroll 14 assists.
In pool play on Sept. 11, OPRF defeated Fenwick 26-24, 25-15, and Riverside-Brookfield 25-14, 21-25, 15-12. In the Gold Bracket the following day, the Huskies defeated Homewood-Flossmoor 25-14, 25-16, then outlasted Lockport in the semifinals 25-11, 18-25, 15-12.
Gray, along with Devyn Kleidon, were named to the All-Tournament Team. OPRF hosts Oswego on Sept. 16 at 6 p.m.
OPRF GIRLS SWIMMING
At the 38th annual Riverside-Brookfield Invitational Sept. 12, OPRF finished fourth with 196 points.
The Huskies’ 400 freestyle relay unit of freshmen Catriona Kelly, Aphra Morales, and Amelia Preissner along with senior Kylie Miller finished second in a time of 3:48.27. Miller was third in both the 50 free (25.93) and the 100 free (56.38).
Morales was third in the 100 backstroke (1:04.17) and sixth in the 200 free (season-best 2:07.02).
OPRF’s 200 free relay of Miller, Morales, Preissner, and freshman Elizabeth Cook took third in a time of 1:45.56. Cook also set a season-best time in the 100 breaststroke, finishing seventh in 1:13.90.
OPRF GIRLS TENNIS
OPRF defeated York 6-3 on Sept. 10, upping its’ dual record to 18-8 this season.
At #1 singles, senior Lucy Stein improved her season record to 12-0, defeating Evelyn Wahl via medical default. Freshman Zoe Glennie won at #2 singles (6-0, 6-1) over Natalie Wierzbicki to improve her record to 10-2, and freshman Vivian Emanuel won at #3 singles (6-1, 6-1), improving to 7-4.
OPRF’s #1 doubles pairing of senior Ava Lebovitz and junior Ella Rangsithienchai defeated Ainsley Williams and Tessa Jones 6-3, 6-0, and the #3 pairing of sophomores Jane Maxfield and Hannah Williams defeated Raina Dalal and Suriana Kansal 6-2, 6-3.
FENWICK CROSS-COUNTRY
At the Steelmen Invitational hosted by Joliet Central, Sept. 12, the Fenwick girls placed fifth with 145 points.
Senior Juliana Gamboa was the Friars’ top runner, finishing fourth in a season-best time of 18:52.7. Junior Bridget Brunick also placed in the top 10, placing eighth in 19:12.1.
Senior Maya Trouillhet ran a personal-best 21:23.3 to finish 40th. Seniors Lily Kotynek (41st, season-best 21:23.3), Allison Austin (53rd, season-best 22:13.3), and Isabelle Lefko (64th, season-best 22:54.8) along with junior Victoria Alegre (69th, season-best 23:28.4) rounded out the lineup.
The Fenwick boys also competed at Joliet Central and finished 11th with 299 points.
Senior Burke Burns was the Friars’ top runner, placing 23rd in a time of 16:46.7. Juniors Wolfie Bergetz (43rd, season-best 17:43.2) and Ryan Mondi (84th, season-best 20:48.9), senior Rod Quintero (85th, personal-best 20:52.1), and juniors Leo Carrizales (88th, season-best 21:22.6) and Emari Cousins (101st, season-best 23:58.1) completed the lineup.
