Oak Park residents deserve the opportunity to weigh in directly on the future of single-family zoning. Recognizing the significance of this issue, I fought to place an advisory referendum before the voters. The public response was overwhelming: more than 250 residents emailed the Village Board, with over 95% expressing support for allowing voters to decide the issue through an advisory referendum.
In addition, more than 400 residents signed a petition in just 36 hours calling for the same opportunity. Despite this clear demonstration of public interest, the village board voted last Tuesday to reject the referendum. Regardless of where you stand on eliminating single-family zoning, denying residents a direct voice on such a consequential policy decision is deeply disappointing and is not reflective of a board that listens to the community.
Although the referendum effort was unsuccessful, the conversation is far from over. The proposal now moves to the Plan Commission for its review, and that process provides another important opportunity for residents to be heard. I support referring the proposal to the Plan Commission because it is the appropriate next step in the process, and I encourage everyone to participate. If you care about the future of Oak Park’s zoning policy, attend the public hearings, offer public comment, and ensure your perspective becomes part of the official record. Meaningful public participation has never been more important.
