River Forest Township Supervisor John Becvar who announced that he is retiring at the end of the summer. | Bob Skolnik

If you’ve ever wanted to be the top elected official in River Forest Township now is the time to apply for the job. The township is now accepting applications for the position of township supervisor because current John Becvar, the current supervisor, is resigning his position this summer after just over two years in the job. The supervisor is a combined executive and legislative job. The supervisor is responsible for overseeing the strategic and day-to-day operations of the township as well as presiding over township board meetings as a voting member of the board.

The position is considered part-time and the annual salary is $49,382. According to a posting on the township website the supervisor is expected to work a minimum of 1,000 hours a year. The township board will appoint the new supervisor later this summer, perhaps at the July 14 meeting of the township board or the August meeting. The person appointed will serve out the remainder of Becvar’s term which runs until May 2029.

Becvar was appointed supervisor in May 2024 after former supervisor Carla Sloan resigned. Running unopposed Becvar was elected to a full four-year term in 2025. Becvar is resigning because he wants to spend more time traveling and doing family orientated things with his husband who last year took an early retirement package from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Before being appointed supervisor Becvar served as the River Forest Township Clerk for one year.

To be considered for the supervisor position one only needs to be a registered voter who has lived in River Forest for at least one year. Those who want to apply for the supervisor position should send an email with a cover letter explaining their qualifications and a resume, along with a signed acknowledgement of the township’s policy handbook and a statement explaining any conflicts of interest, to Supervisor@RiverForestTownship.org by no later than June 25. A full job description of the supervisor position can be found in the township’s policy handbook that is accessible on the township’s website.
