To the Oak Park Village Board,
I am writing as a concerned resident to strongly oppose any proposal that would eliminate or substantially weaken single-family zoning protections throughout Oak Park.
Oak Park’s character, stability, and long-term desirability are rooted in its thoughtfully balanced neighborhoods. Families chose to invest here with the understanding that residential zoning standards would preserve the scale, density, and livability of our community. Abruptly opening the door to widespread multi-unit redevelopment in traditionally single-family areas threatens to permanently alter that balance without adequate public support or demonstrated benefit.
Supporters of these changes continue to frame them as “affordable housing” measures, yet recent development patterns in Oak Park tell a very different story. Time and again, older, naturally affordable housing or modest homes are replaced with significantly more expensive units that are out of reach for working families, seniors, and many longtime residents. Luxury rentals and high-end condominiums do not solve affordability concerns. They accelerate them.
Residents are also justified in worrying about the cumulative impact on parking, traffic congestion, overcrowding, infrastructure strain, storm-water management, and the gradual erosion of neighborhood character. These concerns are not rooted in resistance to progress. They are rooted in practical realities and the desire for responsible planning rather than sweeping policy changes with irreversible consequences.
What is especially troubling is the speed and scope of these proposed zoning shifts compared to the limited level of meaningful public engagement. Decisions of this magnitude should not be pushed through by a small group of officials without broader community consensus. Policies that fundamentally reshape the future of Oak Park deserve far more transparency, public discussion, and direct resident input before implementation.
Oak Park has always been a diverse and vibrant community precisely because of its mix of housing types and carefully planned neighborhoods. Eliminating single-family zoning protections risks undermining the very qualities that have made this village attractive, stable, and economically strong for generations.
I respectfully urge the village board to reject these proposals, pause any further action toward abolishing single-family zoning, and prioritize a process that genuinely reflects the voices of Oak Park residents.
