If you’ve been thinking about getting more involved locally, Celebrating Seniors Week is a perfect place to start. Running May 7-14, this year’s celebration spans Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park, offering more than 35 events that highlight connection, wellness and community spirit.
What makes this week special is its inclusiveness. While it centers on older adults, it’s designed for everyone. Families, caregivers, young professionals and longtime residents all have a place here.
The variety is impressive — from an Oak Park mural tour and an improv workshop for older adults, to community dinners, safety-focused breakfasts and even a pickleball event. These shared experiences bring people together in authentic ways.
For me, the real value lies in the conversations that happen in between. Stories exchanged, laughter shared and connections formed. In a time when it’s easy to feel disconnected, this week offers a reminder of what community can and should be.
I encourage anyone who’s curious to attend at least one event. Show up, listen and engage. You’ll leave with more than you expected.
