OPRF High School’s senior wrestler Jeremiah Hernandez won the 157-pound title at the Redwood Invitational, Jan. 9-10. Hernandez defeated Juan Gallardo of Wasco Union, California in the final via major decision, 12-4, and improved his season record to 20-7. 

Seniors Zach Michaud and Pierre Nelson also secured top-three finishes for the Huskies at Redwood. Michaud (17-8) placed second at 165 pounds, losing 11-6 in the final to Brady Preisendorf of Redwood-Visalia (CA). Nelson (13-11) took third at 215 pounds, defeating Jaxob Denney of Matilda Torres (CA) 9-2 in the third-place match.  

Other Huskies wrestlers who placed were junior Alex Cohen (20-11), seventh at 132; senior Isaiah Gibson (21-11), sixth at 138; and junior Alex Albrecht (13-7), sixth at 150. 

Junior Michael Rundell posted his 100th career victory at the Doc Buchanan Invite in Clovis, California, Jan. 9-10. Rundell placed fifth in the 116-pound class. 

Fenwick boys basketball  

Jake Thies’ basket with 3.7 seconds remaining gave Fenwick a 35-34 home Chicago Catholic League Blue victory over Brother Rice, Jan. 9. Kayonta Williams led the Friars (8-8, 1-2 CCL Blue) with 10 points. Tommy Thies had seven points, and Corey Griffin and Jake Thies each finished with five.  

The following day at the St. Ignatius Shootout, Fenwick defeated Romeoville 61-54.  Following a home game with Leo, Jan. 13, after deadline, the Friars visit DePaul Prep, Jan. 16 (6:30 p.m.), then host St. Patrick in the annual MLK Shootout, Jan. 19, at 1:45 p.m. 

OPRF boys basketball  

OPRF junior D’Angelo Perkins scored 20 points at Hinsdale Central in a West Suburban Silver game, Jan. 9. But it wasn’t enough as the Huskies (4-8, 0-3 WSC Silver) dropped their seventh consecutive contest, 60-49.  

The Huskies hope to get untracked this week with home WSC Silver games against Downers Grove North (Jan. 13, after deadline) and Proviso West (Jan. 16, 7:30 p.m.). OPRF will then participate in the MLK Shootout at Wheaton-Warrenville South, with a pair of games, Jan. 17, versus Waubonsie Valley (1 p.m.) and the host Tigers (5:45 p.m.), followed by a game versus Stevenson, Jan. 19, at 12:45 p.m. 

OPRF girls basketball 

The Huskies (5-13, 2-5 WSC Silver) rolled to a 58-15 conference victory at Proviso West, Jan. 10. OPRF has home games this week versus Lyons Township, Jan. 15, and Payton Prep, Jan. 17, before meeting Trinity at the Trinity MLK Showcase, Jan. 19, at 6:30 p.m.
