Under first-year head coach Jason Renteria, OPRF High School’s boys wrestling team is off to another strong season start. The Huskies took fourth in the Rex Whitlach Invite at Hinsdale Central, Dec. 20, with 191.5 points.
OPRF saw three wrestlers win titles. Junior MJ Rundell, the defending IHSA Class 3A champion at 106 pounds, took home the 113-pound championship, pinning Gabriel Richmond of West Aurora in 1:31 in the final to improve his season record to 16-1.
Junior Jamiel Castleberry also raised his record to 16-1, winning the 126-pound title. In the final, Castleberry defeated Saul Ramirez of Barrington via major decision, 16-4. Senior David Ogunsanya was the Huskies’ third champion, getting a major decision (14-5) over Ty Smart of Rockford East to claim the 157-pound title. Ogunsanya’s record is 14-3 this season.
Senior Zev Koransky (13-4) took second place at 144 pounds, losing to Barrington’s Jimmy Whitaker in the final via major decision, 16-6. OPRF’s other placers were senior Aiden Noyes (15-4) who was third at 150, and senior Jeremiah Hernandez (13-7) who was seventh at 165.
The Huskies, who have won both of their dual meets in the West Suburban Silver, will compete in the Grant Invitational on Jan. 3.
Fenwick
On Dec. 19, the Friars hosted a triangular meet against DePaul Prep and Morton. Fenwick defeated DePaul 54-21, but lost to Morton 42-22.
Sophomore Maurizio Campana (8-5) won both of his triangular matches at 113, pinning Aston Parker of DePaul and edging Tristan Rodriguez of Morton 6-5.
Others who won both triangular matches were junior Harrison Brown (15-5) at 126, senior Solanus Daley (11-1) at 144, senior Robert Arroyo (8-9) at 157, and senior Zikomo Mbewe (13-4) at 215. Brown defeated Morton’s Nicolas Jaramillo 15-12 and pinned DePaul’s Linc Burnell. Daley prevailed 5-4 over Morton’s Ethan Martinez and pinned DePaul’s Thomas Trybula.
Arroyo defeated Morton’s Damien Marillo 10-4 and got a forfeit win against DePaul, while Mbewe pinned Morton’s Benjamin Kearns in 4:23 and pinned DePaul’s Nico Trautman.
The following day at the Fenwick Quad, the Friars defeated Nazareth Academy 51-21 and Round Lake 39-36.
Fenwick competed in the Steve Eckert Holiday Classic at Morton, Dec. 23 (after deadline), and will participate in the Deerfield Holiday Duels, Dec. 27.

Girls Bowling
Despite having just four bowlers available, Fenwick placed fifth out of 13 schools at the Oswego JV Invite, Dec. 22, rolling a total score of 4,020 pins.
The Friars had three finish inside the top 10. Senior Jakayla Davis was fourth with a score of 1,055; junior Millie Ramirez was sixth with a total of 1,029; and junior Josie Milewski was eighth with a total of 1,003.
Senior Mariya Mason was 16th with a score of 933.
