I was initially just shocked to hear that Michael Romain would no longer be writing for your paper. I was also disappointed that the paper put out such a short comment, and suspected there was more to the story. I would have thought his contributions would have meant a more celebratory goodbye and enthusiastic thank you.
I assumed that he was leaving of his own accord, and although I was sad, because his column has been the most interesting thing in the paper for some time, I certainly didn’t want to begrudge him whatever steps he was taking in his career.
But now that I know he did not leave of his own accord, I am pretty outraged. I realize I might not be able to know all the reasons, but it sounds like even he doesn’t know the reasons, and he and this community deserve better.
