Stepping inside the studios of Maywood Fine Arts, visitors are immediately struck by the positive energy. Whether observing classes in dance, tumbling, karate, music, drama or visual arts — visitors see young people and teachers working hard while having fun. It’s that balance between high-quality arts instruction and fun that has drawn students to MFA for over twenty-five years.
Maywood Fine Arts founders Lois & Ernie Baumann have dedicated their lives to sharing the intrinsic values and physical benefits of the arts to young people in nearby under-resourced communities. “Maywood is our home. We believe that every child, regardless of their family income, should have access to fine art programs that allow them to develop their talent, imagine new realities and explore possible education and career paths.”
Recent MFA high school graduate Kyla describes MFA as a community with “so many diverse people all with one common goal. We all want to support each other. You can always rely on each other.” Other recent high school graduates describe MFA as “reliable” and their experience, in the case of Darnell, a young man now studying music at the university level, as “a journey.” MFA has created a nurturing environment with a strong sense of community.
Every student has the opportunity, and is expected, to perform or present their accomplishments. And nobody puts on a show like MFA! Whether it’s playing an instrument, showing off the perfect cartwheel or completing a beautiful ballet leap, the process is infused with joy!
