A young patron checks out her book without assistance in the Children's Room at River Forest Public Library. A new self-check machine in the lobby will make checking out materials safer and easier for all patrons thanks to a grant from the RFPL Foundation.

In normal times, River Forest Public Library welcomes more than 100,000 visitors through its doors each year. While there, patrons check out more than 250,000 physical items—an average of 20,000 books, movies, kits, CDs, DVDs and more per month.

During the COVID pandemic, RFPL needed to move to self-service checkouts only to improve safety for patrons and staff in a heavily used public building. Unfortunately, two of the Library’s 3 self-checkout machines are obsolete and need to be replaced. The Bibliotechia self-check machine purchased in 2019 is highly reliable and easy for patrons of all ages to use without assistance.  It has been moved to the Children’s Room where circulation volume is highest.

The RFPL Foundation has given the Library a $10,000 grant to purchase a new Bibliotechia self-check machine for the main lobby to provide more efficient borrowing and help maintain social distancing for patrons and staff. The Library will fund replacement of the other obsolete machine from its capital reserve fund. The Foundation was established in 2015 to enhance the Library today and for the future.  It has funded the 2019 renovation of the Children’s Room, special programs, and other initiatives.

Your donation to the RFPL Foundation has impact today and for years to come by supporting the Library in providing a safe and welcoming space for people of all ages to imagine, learn, explore, and connect.  Learn more and donate at www.rfplfoundation.org.
