West Suburban Medical Center welcomed its first delivery of the new year and new decade shortly after midnight New Year’s Day.

Born at 1:17 a.m., Maria Jose Franco weighs 7 pounds, 1 ounce and is 19 inches long. The hospital believes that she is also the first Hispanic baby born in the Chicago-area this year.

Maria’s parents Valeria Garduno Correa and David Franco are from Michoacán, Mexico. They came to the area two months ago to visit family in Melrose Park.

The married couple has two other children, but Maria is their first child born in the United States.
