The erratic bluster of Donald Trump whipped up fear of mass deportations starting last weekend. As he does typically, Trump backed down offering an illusory two-week period for a magical solution to an immigration crisis he has amped up for political gain.

Even with the delay, it was heartening to see Oak Park Mayor Anan Abu-Taleb issue a statement Saturday making clear Oak Park police “will not cooperate with ICE or assist them in any way.”

Town by town, state by state, Americans need to stand up to this irrational bully and stand up for values of welcome and decency.

Abu-Taleb’s statement was a piece of that process.
