The Library is again partnering with River Forest Township to deliver special programming to the senior community during Celebrating Seniors Week (May 18-25). This is the 7th annual series of events made possible by Celebrating Seniors, a community organization dedicated to recognizing and honoring seniors in River Forest, Oak Park, and Forest Park.

A highlight of this year’s Celebrating Seniors events at the Library will most certainly be a visit from critically acclaimed and popular author Elizabeth Berg. She will speak about her body of work on Sunday, May 21, 2 PM at the Roosevelt Middle School Auditorium. A book signing will follow.

Ms. Berg, born in 1948 in St. Paul, Minnesota, was a nurse for 10 years before returning to her true passion of writing. To date, she has authored26 books, including: We Are All Welcome Here, The Year of Pleasures, The Art of Mending, Say When, and Open House, which was an Oprah’s Book Club selection in 2000. Her upcoming title, The Story of Arthur Truluv, will be published in late July 2017. She lives in Oak Park, IL.

In addition to Elizabeth Berg’s visit, the following programs will be offered at the Library during Celebrating Seniors Week 2017:

Friday, May 19, 7-8 PM, Terry Sullivan Trio Jazz Concert, a relaxing evening of intimate jazz.

Monday, May 22, 7-8 PM, Historical Buildings of River Forest with Al Popowits, who will give a lecture on a variety of historically and architecturally significant structures in River Forest.

Tuesday, May 23, 10-11 AM, Books ‘n’ Bagels featuring booktalks from RFPL Librarians and delicious snacks. Plus, bring your own favorite reads to share!

For more information about Celebrating Seniors Week, be sure to pick up the Celebrating Seniors Resource Guide. Here, you’ll find a calendar of events throughout the community, “60 over 60” honorees, and senior resources. Copies will be available at the Library.

Seniors are celebrated all year long at River Forest Public Library. Programs on history, travel, current events, architecture, and the arts happen year round, in partnership with River Forest Township. The Coffee Monday program, Computer Learning Labs, and Foreign Film Forum are also wonderful offerings for seniors and all adults. Patrons who are unable to get to the Library for any reason may take advantage of our home delivery program.
