Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Kovacs is a committed Oak Park Education Foundation supporter, both as a donor and volunteer with the Science Alliance program. She began volunteering in the classroom when her daughter was young. “Even though she is long past the Oak Park public school system, I think it is important to support programs that have helped me and my family.”

Dr. Kovacs is a professor in the department of surgery at Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine, and a director of their Alcohol Research Program. She is passionate about educating kids about the negative effects of smoking and drinking. During last year’s residency with Beye 4th graders, she brought the lessons to life with alcohol-simulation goggles and real human lungs from a smoker and a non-smoker.

“OPEF is a great way to engage scientists in public schools. I especially like the fact that the program is accessible to every child.”
