Nearly 500 student head injuries were recorded in elementary school District 97 so far during the 2013-2014 school year, according to data compiled by the district.
Between August 2013 and June 2014, the district had 474 reported head injuries by students, which were considered “minor” and not requiring hospitalization. The majority of injuries, 330, occurred on school playgrounds, with 44 occurring in classrooms, 66 during physical education and only three in lunchrooms. All 474 injuries occurred in August, September and October of 2013, according to D97.
District spokesperson Chris Jasculca says updated injury data will be presented to the Board of Education at the end of the school year. D97 began regularly reporting head injury data following complaints by some parents that such information was not readily available to families.
District officials, however, maintain that injury data is routinely compiled by school nurses.
