Grace Lutheran School boys basketball coach William Thompson, featured on the front page of the Jan. 29 edition of the Wednesday Journal, recently won his 900th coaching victory of a grade-school career that has lasted 43 years.
Grace’s seventh- and eighth-graders defeated a team from Roselle on Feb. 1 during a Lutheran school tournament that Grace went on to win the next day.
Thompson, 67, will leave Grace at the end of the year after 14 years. Having coached in Melrose Park, Roselle and Hong Kong, Thompson earned victories 700 on up at Grace.
He and his wife, Jane, have signed on to work at a Lutheran education center in Slovokia for two years.
