Crain’s Chicago Business reported that as many as 10 of the remaining 55 Dominick’s stores in the Chicago area could be purchased by independent grocery stores associated with Centrella, a grocery cooperative based in Joliet.
Crain’s reports that unnamed sources confirm that the Centrella is currently in talks with Safeway for the soon-to-be-shuttered. Tony’s Finer Foods, Treasure Island and Strack & Van Til are among independently owned grocers within the Centrella network that could more into the Dominick’s stores, which are scheduled to close their doors Dec. 28.
The story gives no specifics on the future of the two Dominick’s locations in Oak Park and River Forest that have yet to attract a buyer.
