It’s hard to tell two leaves on the same tree apart. Then autumn arrives and the green mask comes off.
As trees absorb nutrients in the leaves to prepare for the long winter, natural pigments trapped in the leaves give each one a unique identity with varying intensities of gold, orange and red.
The trees have shaken their leaves and gray is setting in, but a walk along the streets of Oak Park and River Forest offers a last splash of color on the street and sidewalk canvas from fallen leaves that somehow avoided the rake, blower and mulch pile.
