In the wake of a shooting Friday at a Connecticut elementary school, Oak Park and River Forest school staff are informing parents that they have procedures in place to promote safety.
The statements from District 90 Superintendent Ed Condon, District 200 Superintendent Steven Isoye and Principal Nathaniel Rouse and District 97 Superintendent Al Roberts, all say they are shocked and saddened at the events on Friday and their thoughts are with the Newtown community’s families.
At D90, Condon said security plans include restricted school access for visitors, lockdown drills and a crisis plan that is reviewed annually with River Forest’s police and fire departments. The D200 statement also said staff have a lockdown drill to be implemented in the case of an intruder, which is reviewed with students on a regular basis. D97 has a similar drill, as well as en emergency notification system and secured entrances. The district is also in the process of installing swipe card access systems at all its buildings, which will be completed after winter break. The middle schools have security cameras.
Counselors and social workers are available at all schools, the statements said.
