Local beekeepers Frank Saballus and Mark Henning helped to move hives from the Chicago Honey Co-Op last year after it was forced to relocate. Some of the hives were moved to this space, near Railroad and Menard avenues in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood.
Henning, who originally became involved with the Co-Op for composting, is now learning the art of beekeeping and harvesting honey – though he still considers himself only a “junior beekeeper”. Saballus and Henning produce honey from these as well as a network of hives throughout the greater Oak Park area. Through pollination, the bees have transformed what used to be an abandoned industrial space to an area full of wildflowers.
