The Madison Street Theater, 1010 Madison St. in Oak Park is hosting another “$5 Documentary Films” weekend for you. Â Saturday, 3/3 is filled with interesting docs starting at 2pm with “Refrigerator Mothers” by Chicago’s master documentarians at Kartemquin Films. Â It explores the 1950s – 1960s blame game on “cold mothers” as the reason for autism and how this position devastated families. Â It is one of the earliest documentaries which detailed autism and the few treatments provided and lack of knowledge which surrounded it. Â
At 5pm, see “Short Films of Lisa Barcy” which looks at the power of animation.  At 7pm, “Louder Than A Bomb” follows the story of four Chicago teens as they compete in the world’s largest poetry slam for youth. This is an award-winning doc with many fans.  See the attached clip.
On Sunday, 3/4 at 2pm, come see “Life Lessons/My Mother’s Ideas” which details a woman’s looking back at her girlhood dancing dreams, or were they her mother’s dreams. Â Sample the attached clip.
