Here is a placement issue involving the park district that we are entirely clear about: The sharing of an administrative building by the parks and the District 97 elementary schools is a great idea.

Consolidation and collaboration must be the mantra of all local government going forward. The burden of taxes is too great, the opportunities for innovation too big to ignore.

Right now both D97 and the parks are headquartered on Madison Street. The parks and its warehouse/gymnastics center are at Harvey. The school’s central office is in a hideous and crumbling building at Home Avenue, plus a warehouse at Scoville Avenue. Move the administration of both into the park headquarters. Share the garage/warehouse at Scoville. And put the current D97 headquarters on the market.

There are lots of complicating details. But the logic of this combination is irrefutable.
