Starting Thursday, a grant provided by the Illinois Department of Transportation will allow the River Forest Police Department to participate in the Thanksgiving Holiday Safety Campaign.
Thanks to IDOT funding, police are able to hire back police officers on overtime to enforce state and local statutes like speeding, driving under the influence, safety belt use and other aggressive driving behaviors. The campaign runs from Nov. 17 to Nov. 27 and will be conducted primarily from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., according to a press release from the department.
Interim police chief Gregory Weiss said in the release that statistics show the behaviors police will be addressing are the leading causes of injuries and deaths on roadways.
“Motorists should expect to receive a traffic ticket if stopped for a violation, and to be arrested if they are found to be driving under the influence,” he said.
