While crews tear up the 100 block of South Marion, preparing to dress it up with brick streets and granite sidewalks, another, less visible change just occurred in the business district.

Leaders have started calling the shopping area — home to such businesses as Poor Phil’s Bar & Grill and the Marion Street Cheese Market — the “Pleasant District.”

Oak Park has been going through an effort to “rebrand” its main shopping districts, and leaders on South Marion thought it made sense, as part of that process, to switch up South Marion’s name, said Mary Jo Schuler, president of what’s now called the Pleasant District Association.

“It seems like good timing,” she said.

The name is an allusion to historic Pleasant Home, located just east of the business district (at the corner of Pleasant and Home). Pleasant and Marion is the heart of the district. The business association’s members voted on the name change last month, and recently started using it on their website and in their marketing efforts.

In the same vein, the Avenue Business District, near the intersection of Lake Street in Oak Park Avenue, is also changing its name. It will now be called the Hemingway District, according to Schuler.
