An upscale bakery chain is making its first foray into the Chicago area later this year, and is setting up shop in downtown Oak Park.

Property owner Anthony Shaker announced Friday that New York-based Crumbs Bake Shop recently signed a long-term lease to take over the other half of 1100 Lake St. The space was formerly occupied by Barbara’s Bookstore, which closed about a year ago. Potbelly’s Sandwich Shop opened last November in the other half of the storefront.

Crumbs first opened in New York City in 2003, and has since expanded to 34 locations, with 11 more to come, according to a Shaker press release. They deal in handmade deserts, mainly focusing on cupcakes, with coffee also available. Flavors include caramel apple, carrot, pink lemonade and watermelon, according to their website, www.crumbs.com.

Shaker said in the press release that Crumbs hopes to open by the end of this year.
