No, the survey isn’t scientific. But it may be conclusive. Downtown Oak Park has released the overwhelming results of its online tally. The results: Oak Parkers have an open mind about relaxing alcohol service in the village. And it is time to do just that.

We’ve written before urging the Liquor Control Review Board to follow the hints they are getting from the village board and to recommend a series of commonsense expansions of the liquor ordinance. Yes, to mimosas at Sunday brunch. Yes, to limited liquor service at bed & breakfasts. Yes, to a brewpub. Yes, to an end of the charade that you have to buy an appetizer to get a decent drink at a restaurant.

Alcohol and entertainment are the best economic development tools Oak Park has had over the past four decades. Let’s proclaim it. Let’s use it.

Of course, Oak Park is going to be cautious in writing this ordinance. Of course, Oak Park will be cautious in vetting applicants. But it starts by writing an ordinance that says, “Yes, we want you to open your brewpub in our town and not be nervous because we know we have a reputation for being difficult on the subject.”

And since this is the first complete rewrite in 40 years let’s go farther. We’d love to see a Binny’s at Oak Park and Madison. Big, well run, well known and bursting with property and sales taxes. What’s not to love? We’re open to an upscale bar that is a great place to gather but has food as an afterthought.

Let’s get to it.
