Oak Park police are still investigating a shooting that occurred last Wednesday afternoon in an alley south of the 800 block of Lake Street. No arrests have yet been made.

Oak Park Commander LaDon Reynolds said police were able to locate a possible victim after reports came in on June 15 that shots had been fired.

The man was taken in handcuffs from the Suburban Automotive Inc. building, located on the 800 block of North Blvd., which backs up to the Lake Street alleyway. Police also located a single shell casing. Reynolds said there were no reported injuries.

“We have not identified the offender as of yet,” said Reynolds. He said police did receive some information from the man in custody. The police summary report stated that the incident occurred at 2:45 p.m. The alleged victim told police he engaged in a verbal altercation with the offender while the offender, a male, was in a vehicle driven by a woman. The male offender reportedly exited the car and displayed a chrome-plated semi-automatic handgun. The victim then fled on foot and heard a single gunshot. The offender fled in an unknown direction.

Police cars converged on the alley shortly after 3 p.m., and minutes later, police escorted a man in handcuffs out of the Suburban Automotive building. While sitting in the back seat of a police car, the man could be heard saying that he was scared because another man had fired shots at him. The man in custody appeared to be uninjured.

An eyewitness to the shooting said the two men had come running down the third floor fire escape of an adjacent apartment building, some 50 feet apart. The eyewitness said the man in custody had been pursued by the shooter, who fired shots, then calmly walked away from the scene, through a parking lot near Suburban Automotive.

Both Oak Park and River Forest police were on the scene, along with unmarked police vehicles. Shortly after the handcuffed man was driven away in a police car, Reynolds asked spectators to step back while officers taped off the area.

“This is a crime scene,” he said.
