The Oak Park and River Forest softball team opened its season with a 2-1 victory over Morton last week.
Seana Stillson allowed one unearned run on six hits in her senior debut. The right-hander fanned 11 batters and yielded no walks in seven innings.
Lauren Gonzalez and Asia Babbington each drove in runs for the Huskies. Gonzalez finished the day going 2-for-3 with an RBI double. Maggie Paoli went 2-for-3 at the plate in the win.
The Huskies are scheduled to host Wheaton-Warrenville South Thursday (4:30 p.m.). They’ll welcome Lake Park Saturday (11 a.m.) for a doubleheader.
OPRF volleyball battles back
The OPRF volleyball team won the consolation title at the Hoffman Estates Invitational on Saturday.
The Huskies (3-3 overall) finished 3-2 at the tournament, downing Leyden 27-26, 27-26 for the consolation championship. OPRF battled its way back to contention after losses to Naperville Central and Palatine.
Naperville Central took first place at the tournament with a victory over New Trier.
“It was a good weekend of volleyball for us,” said OPRF head coach Don August. “The team didn’t sit idle after the losses; they forged ahead.”
Huskies splash to three wins
The OPRF girls water polo team put together a string of victories last week to push its overall record to 6-3 on the early season.
The Huskies downed Schaumburg 15-7 on Saturday behind Audrey Reardon’s seven goals and Alex El Guindi’s four. Reardon finished with five assists, four steals and four knockouts drawn. El Guindi pocketed six steals in the victory, while Kati Pedersen added two goals and three steals.
On Thursday, OPRF battled West Suburban Conference foe York to a 15-14 overtime win. Reardon came away with six goals, while El Guindi and Anna Weir each netted two apiece. Goalkeeper Isabel Firpo racked up 11 saves for the Huskies, who outscored Lockport 17-11 on March 19. Reardon finished with nine goals and five steals, and Pedersen with three goals and three steals in that win.
Florida-bound Friars crush Mt. Carmel
Before jet-setting off to the tropical state of Florida for a few games this week, the Fenwick boys water polo team annihilated Mt. Carmel 23-2 to push its early-season record to a perfect 6-0.
George Groen led the Friars with four goals, while Colin Corvino and Will Schulenberg (4 assists) each scored three goals apiece. Mark Ryden, Terry Sweeney, and Will Rigali finished with two goals apiece. Goalkeeper Jon Odland finished with six saves and Matt Napleton four.
The Friars were to begin the Gulliver Prep Invitational in Miami last night.
Fenwick girls head south
The Fenwick girls water polo team geared up for its whirlwind trip to Florida by pummeling Marian Catholic 16-1 last week.
The win pushed the Friars to a perfect 4-0 on the season.
“Things are going real well to start the season,” said Fenwick head coach Jack Wagner from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where the Friars were preparing to play Ransom High School. “It makes this trip all that much better when you start things off with wins.”
The Friars return home Friday to host the Mike Murphy Tournament.
