Wrongful firing grievance proceedings have stalled for one of Oak Park’s dismissed Public Works employees because the village accidently overpaid $882 in wages to the ex-employee.
Jerry Norman, a former employee of the Water and Sewer Division of the Public Works department, was paid $882.67 twice by the village on the day he was fired, once by check and once by direct deposit to his checking account.
After the error was discovered, the village attempted to transfer the direct deposit from Norman’s account back to the village, but the bank stopped the transaction at Norman’s request.
The issue resulted because Norman was paid by check the day he left, said village Finance Director Greg Peters. Then the automatic payment kicked in.
The village told Norman grievance procedures would go no further until Norman pays up. Norman says he can’t afford to pay back the money because he has been unable to find more than temporary employment.
