The end of summer is proving to be a busy time for news on the housing side of Oak Park. After a nation-wide search, the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust announced its new president and CEO.
Chris Taylor will take the reins at the trust in mid-October. He comes to the trust with over 25 years of experience leading mission-driven arts and cultural organizations. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture and a bachelor’s in religious studies from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, he also holds a Master of Arts Administration and Policy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
In a written statement provided by the trust, Taylors says, “It’s an honor to lead the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust at a pivotal moment in its history. Frank Lloyd Wright talked about a house being built of the hill, not on the hill. He was talking about sustainable design long before it was fashionable. That way of thinking has something to say about how we build and live now and into the future. My job, along with a dedicated group of staff and volunteers, is to make sure the trust sets the stage so people can experience Wright’s legacy firsthand.”

Oak Park’s homegrown architect
Born in Oak Park in 1885, John Van Bergen was the second of four children. He had an uncle who was a residential contractor and was surrounded by construction projects from a young age as the streets of Oak Park began to fill with newly built homes.
As a child, Van Bergen’s family lived at what is now 532 Fair Oaks Ave. The Victorian home sits across the street from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Rollin Furbeck House. The home still stands today and was greatly altered in the 1940’s.
He attended Oak Park High School, when it was on Lake Street. While there, he created his first known drawing: a map of the high school district dated June 1904.
