Trinity softball team’s eight-game winning streak came to a screeching halt over the weekend with losses to Elmwood Park and Ridgewood.
Spring break was good for the Blazers. They carved out the eight wins before falling flat with 7-0 loss to Elmwood Park on Friday. The team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Ridgewood on Saturday, 2-1 and 8-7. Their record now stands at 15-13.
Trinity had only two hits in the first game on Saturday against Ridgewood. Catcher Christina Carbonaro hit a monster home run to put the Blazers up 1-0 in the second. Ridgewood answered at the bottom of the inning with a run to tie the game. They then scored the go-ahead and final run in the fourth.
Ridgewood’s pitcher, Trina Fields, gave the Blazers trouble the entire game, notching 13 strikeouts. After Carbonaro’s home run, Trinity did not get a hit until pitcher Allison Hernandez’s single in the fifth.
“We have to pick ourselves up and do what we can,” said Hernandez, who took the loss for the Blazers. She fanned six batters in the game.
In the nightcap, Ridgewood took the early lead in the first inning with two runs. With two outs in the second, Michelle Carlini singled and then Rena Maritote drove in the run to get Trinity on the scoreboard. The Blazers took the lead in the third when Carbonaro’s triple scored two runs. Allison Mazurek doubled in another run in the top of the fourth, putting Trinity up 4- 2, but Ridgewood had a huge fourth inning. They tied the game and then a grand slam put them in the lead by a score of 8-4.
The Blazers were on the comeback trail in the seventh. Carbonaro got her third RBI of the day with a double, and Hernandez’s pinch-hit two-run homer cut the lead to one. Ridgewood brought their pitching ace Fields back into the game. She struck out the next two batters to end the game and secure the win.
“They fought really hard in the last inning and I’m proud of them to fight that way,” said Trinity coach Bob Osborne of his team. :We just need to fight that hard the whole game.”
Carbonaro finished with three hits and three RBIs on the day. Outfielder Allison Mazurek had three hits and one RBI in Game 2.
Trinity plays Westmont at Triton College today (Wednesday, 4:30). A special ceremony before the game will honor the seven seniors on the team.
