The Park District of Oak Park has been awaiting an architect’s report on whether its newly purchased property on Lake Street — the former Aldi grocery store — would be adequate in size and specifications to house an expanded gymnastics program.

The alternative idea was to shift the park’s building and grounds department to the Aldi site while expanding the gymnastics center on Madison Street.

Now we are happy to report that the architect has signed off on Lake Street as a prime location for the young gymnasts. And we look forward to the park board making that declaration official as early as its meeting this Thursday. As we have argued in recent months, this key corner at Lake and Humphrey needs the vitality that the hundreds of weekly visits by the highly limber among us can offer. There isn’t a more successful youth sports program in the village than gymnastics and bringing it to the east edge of Oak Park will be a tonic for this small commercial strip.

Let’s make this project happen.
