Fenwick senior guard Maya Garland is the Wednesday Journal's Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Midtown Athletic Club. She has signed with the University of Alabama at Birmingham to play college basketball.

Despite an injury-riddled roster and atypically sluggish start for the Fenwick girls basketball team, senior guard Maya Garland has played well this season. For her steady contributions, the River Forest resident has earned the Wednesday Journal Athlete of the Week, sponsored by the Midtown Athletic Club.

At the Sterling Tournament, Garland scored 14 points in the Friars’ 63-61 win over Hononegah. She also netted 18 points in a 67-63 victory over the host Golden Warriors.

Next year, Garland will attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham and play basketball for the Blazers. Former OPRF star Ashleen Bracey, the UAB recruiting coordinator, influenced Garland’s choice.

“I chose UAB because of the coaching staff and it just felt like the right fit for me,” Garland said.

She plans on attending medical school.
