Insight Health Systems, originally founded in Flint, Michigan, recently took over ownership and operation of West Suburban Medical Center, sharing its intentions to rehabilitate and reopen the struggling hospital. However, this is not its first time taking over a failing medical provider, and those are yet to successfully reopen.
In November 2024, Insight was officially announced as the new owner for Trumbull Regional Medical Center and Rehabilitation Hospital Hillside in Warren, Ohio, after the former parent company Steward Health Care filed bankruptcy and planned to close.
Just a few months into their ownership in March 2025, the doors for both facilities closed, and all 143 employees from Insight Rehabilitation Hospital Hillside were furloughed.
The rehabilitation hospital’s website displays the closure announcement saying it was “Due to additional abrupt developments in Steward Health Care’s bankruptcy proceedings and the mounting lack of transferred dollars owed for healthcare services”
The closure was only supposed to last for about six months. An inspection from the Ohio Department of Health for both facilities in September 2025 stopped the plans to reopen after it found conditions to be insufficient citing several improvements that were needed, according to reporting from multiple local news outlets in the area.
Just a month later, the 24/7 emergency room was allowed to reopen at Insight Hospital and Medical Center Trumbull. That same month, the federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services terminated their agreement with the hospital for not complying with Medicare Conditions for Participation and not following requirement for the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act.
About a year after Insight gained ownership of the hospitals, in November 2025, Insight Trumbull had to close the emergency room once again after the Ohio Department of Health moved to revoke its state license. The hospital eventually agreed to surrender its license in January of this year.
The hospitals have remained closed and local officials continue to advocate for their reopening.
“The decision by Insight Hospital & Medical Center Trumbull to relinquish its license back to the State of Ohio is deeply concerning for the people of Warren, Trumbull County, and the surrounding communities,” wrote Ohio Rep. Nick Santucci in a statement.
Rev. Dr. Henry Barlow, a board member for Insight Hospital and Medical Center Chicago, formerly Mercy Hospital on the Near South Side, declined to comment on the Ohio hospital closures and what it could mean for West Suburban Medical Center and Weiss Memorial Hospital. Insight media and public relations also did not respond to an inquiry about the closures.
In a press conference on Sept. 17, Barlow was asked about media transparency.
“It’s the policy of Insight, we shoot straight from the hip. We’ll always do that, or I won’t be a part of it,” said Barlow.
Concerns over the finances of Insight’s Chicago hospital have also been raised. Chicago Public Media reported that Insight lost almost $30 million and received about $50 million in advances from the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services in order to remain open.
The American Hospital Directory report shows a net loss of about $9.2 million for Insight Chicago from the hospital’s most recent Medicare Cost Report ending in 2025.
A group of doctors from West Suburban Medical Center conducted a vote in August to say they have no confidence in Insight Health Systems ability to run the hospital.
Barlow was asked about the vote of no confidence at the press conference.
“Those individuals were led astray by some individuals who didn’t know what they’re talking about,” said Barlow.
