The current controversy over Oak Park’s proposed zoning requirements highlights the need for major reforms in how municipal governments operate in Illinois. There was another situation in Bartlett where the Park District of Carol Stream annexed a part of another town for taxing purposes. In both cases, the local governments were not required to put the issue to a vote in a referendum. I’m sure there are other instances across the state where municipal government overreach has taken place.
I think the state needs to amend the laws regarding municipal governments and how they operate. And specifically require them to hold binding referendums on issues having a major impact on their communities. I also think that the state should define a process whereby residents can recall their elected officials. After all, if the governor can be recalled, why not city mayors, village board presidents and other elected officials?
It’s time we had more accountability for local government officials.
