As Sugar Fixé Pâtisserie completes its first year under new ownership, the French bakery at 119 N. Marion St. in Oak Park is building on a legacy that dates back to 2011. Over the past 15 years, Sugar Fixé has become a community cornerstone, known for its pastries, cakes, and role in helping mark celebrations both big and small.
Managing owner Juan Muñoz brings a background in coffee and business development, along with years of involvement in the Oak Park community and service on nonprofit boards. He describes the past year as personally challenging, but also one that has reinforced his commitment to preserving what people have long loved about Sugar Fixé and strengthening its place in the community. The focus, he says, is on building a neighborhood bakery that can be part of both everyday visits and life’s celebrations.
Corrie Pechan, who has served as cake director since 2018, said the bakery is in a strong place as the team looks toward its next chapter. For Pechan, the priority remains flavor over flash. She noted that during wedding tastings, clients often say taste matters even more than design. That focus on creating cakes that are as memorable to eat as they are visually stunning remains central to the bakery’s approach.
Muñoz says cakes will remain a cornerstone of the shop going forward. Cakes have long been a strength and a source of pride for Sugar Fixé, he said, crediting Pechan’s work and emphasizing a desire for the bakery to be part of even more family celebrations. The goal is also to keep cakes in the display cases, ready for a birthday, a housewarming gift, or any occasion worth celebrating.
Alongside custom and everyday cakes, the cases are filled daily with croissants, entremets, macarons, tarts, and iced sugar cookies, all made from scratch in-house.
