In an effort to expand parking and improve access for patients and visitors, especially those using the emergency department, Rush Oak Park Hospital plans to demolish the vacant building it owns at 1147 Madison St., a former currency exchange.
A hospital spokesperson said that in addition to expanded parking and campus circulation improvement, new landscaping is anticipated, along with signage and other streetscape enhancements that will “improve the appearance, accessibility and safety of this prominent corner adjacent to the hospital.”
The spokesperson noted that the project is a standalone, and is not part of the hospital’s ongoing, long-term master planning.
Construction is expected to be completed by early October. Craig Failor, director of the Oak Park village’s development services department said that applications have been made for demolition and site and landscaping plans, all of which are currently under review.
“We are working closely with the village of Oak Park to move this project forward in a way that minimizes disruption to our neighbors, patients and visitors,” said Dr. Dino Rumoro, chief administration officer of Rush Oak Park Hospital, located at 520 S. Maple Ave.
The hospital spokesperson also said the building is currently undergoing asbestos and lead paint abatement, which is anticipated to be finished by Thursday.
